Dream rooms really DO come true!

Well, I am officially moved in to my new space! It took the greater part of 48 straight hours to do all of the moving, heavy lifting (mostly on my dad and brothers’ end), last minute furnishings shopping, unpacking, and of course setting it all up to look just the way I dreamt it.

When I began planning my room, I first went to all the great sites mentioned in my More, more decor! post, with only small ideas of what I was looking for. Basically, I wanted it to be completely different than my room last year, and certainly different than my room at home; with dragonflies on the ceiling, stray stuffed animals, and a bedspread that completely clashes, that room is a splendid blend of 8-year-old me and 16-year-old me, two girls with very different ideas of “style.” I wanted my room to be calming yet energizing, clean and classic, and include some subtle touches of boho. Most importantly, I needed it to be ORGANIZED. That is the most important factor in staying stress-free, confident, and productive– all of which are my main goals for this year.

After initial online browsing, I came up with a color scheme: varied shades of teal blue, dark grays, and pops of lime green. From there, my mom and I hit up all the go-to spots ie. Homegoods, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond.

Sooo, at long last, here is the final product!

(drumroll……)

Oh hey.

Oh hey.

Truly true. This is my mantra for the year, hung right where I can see it every morning!

My bed is perhaps my favorite part. It is a queen, so I had to turn the bed lengthwise against the wall to open up space. With plenty of plush bedding, it turned out to be like a couch bed! I hung the curtains behind it for an extra unique pop in the room.

Back to Old School

The dog days of summer are winding down and it’s time to start thinking about getting back to school. High schoolers, you will soon learn that the prospect of returning to school is much more exciting in college. But even in my grade school days, back-to-school was exciting solely for the clothes shopping.

This season, start your shopping in your attic! Old school style is feeling fresh this year, with modern takes on varsity jackets, cardigans, and pleated skirts.

In this look, my skirt is certainly vintage, but its actually my mom’s old tennis skirt!

More, more decor!

Hard to believe it is already August, that my internship is over, that I am sitting in front of a gorgeous French window overlooking the beach at Turks and Caicos, and that I start my second year of college two weeks from today. It’s a lot to take in.

When I’m not paddle boarding, reading The Divine Life of Molly Marx (recommended) or scuba diving, I am researching ideas for decorating my new apartment. Living in a dorm was all good and fun, but finally having a room all to myself again (and a queen size bed, I may be a bit of a princess) is something I have long been looking forward to. Although I am far from finished sorting out my new room, I thought I might share some of my helpful tools with those of you heading back to school as well! For those heading off to dorm life, check out my post on how I decorated my freshman dorm for some tips on making it a bit more homey.

The following sites are great for everything from bedding to decor to furniture to inspiration. And most have an app for easy research while lounging poolside!

Pinterest: I shouldn’t need to explain this one. You search, you like, you pin, repeat.

Joss & Main: amazing daily deals on every kind of home furnishing. Think Hautelook but exclusively for homes.

H&M: that’s right, people. Your favorite affordable chic shopping store now offers equally desirable finishing touches to your abode. Shop individual items or get inspired by their boho, minimalistic, modern, or girly themed collections!

Urban Outfitters & Anthropologie: these stores are known for their home section just as much as their clothing. It takes all the willpower I have to not climb into one of the perfectly plumped and made up beds in Anthro stores, and their mugs, candles, and wall art? “Adorable” would be an understatement. Unfortunately, they also are known for charging a pretty penny, and that’s when I look to my dear friend Ebay.

These are some starting points, but obviously there are a gazillion other sites out there to explore, not to mention flea markets and vintage fairs for truly unique final touches!

New Nautical OOTD, and some exciting news!

New nautical
This past Sunday I attended the HerCampus HerConference event in NYC. In case you weren’t stalking my social media accounts– I might have gone a little overboard…– it was a day packed with speakers and panels, discussing everything from how to break into publishing to “How to Make your Blog a Powerhouse.” Not only that, but we got catered Chipotle lunch (nom) and had access to a BCBGeneration sample sale and Love Amika beauty bar! To put it simply, the awesome swag bag I received upon check-in only got more and more packed with samples and papers and products and snacks throughout the day!
While there was plenty of sitting and note-taking, there was also lots of mingling and standing around, which meant I had to plan an outfit that would allow me to be confident, cute and, most importantly, comfortable! I put together a Polyvore set with items very similar to mine, so you can shop the outfit! I made it on their new iPhone App, which I had been awaiting not-so-patiently for a while now– I am quite pleased with its turnout!
This weekend will be a very special one, for two reasons. First, it will be my last weekend in New York (…um..what? already??) which means I have to live it up!! Sam and I are going to try to go to this spot called the Frying Pan on Friday night and hit up Brooklyn either Saturday or Sunday. Hmm.. Smourgasburg or Brooklyn Flee?
Second, this weekend I will be posting about my VERY FIRST GIVEAWAY! I will be giving away and whole shlew of samples that I received at HerConference, and believe you me, these are products I already want in full size! They are just that awesome. You will each have multiple chances to enter so don’t miss out!
What else should I do for my last weekend?! Any and all suggestions welcome!

Suit Up

20130727-171759.jpg

It’s the weekend and it’s time to suit up, and I mean that in the most comfortable way possible. Rompers and jumpsuits are so easy to throw on, it’s almost unbelievable that they can be so stylish at the same time. Go minimal in a solid color, only adding accessories if you so please– trust me, either way you will look en pointe. I decided to go bold and boho for my afternoon at the Met in a jumpsuit and denim cap from Urban Outfitters.

A Change of Space

You may have noticed how my blog theme has been changing every so often. Perhaps too often… but this is because I have not yet found the theme or layout that truly speaks to me, that shares my personality, that really represents and just “fits” my blog. Thus, all the experimentation– and this isn’t even the end of it. Yayy for change of space! Think about it as rearranging your room. Eventually, it feels so stale and no longer like your space. Well, this blog is very much like my bedroom, where I get to do and say and show whatever I want, and I have complete control over how I want it to look. Call me Goldilocks, but I like to switch things up and try things out until I find what is just right.

On the same thread, I have finally decided on a new blog name. I never truly adored my blog name, and was way too eager to start blogging to really find a fantastic name. Then I got so caught up in school, life, and keeping my blog going that I never got around to coming up with a good one. I wanted it to have meaning, I wanted it to be unique, I wanted it to relate to me as well as what I do here.

“Magpie’s Closet” came from a family nickname and the fact that I basically was introducing you all to my wardrobe, what enters it, how I build it up without overly spending, and so on. I like the premise of the name, but not the name itself. So after weeks of brainstorming, writing and rewriting titles on random pieces of paper, asking friends and family for (A LOT OF) opinions, I came up with….drumdrumdrumdrum….One Mod Duck.

Now for the thought process:

One –> there is only one person behind these words, that would be yours truly :)

Mod –> First, there is the obvious meaning of “mod” as it relates to modernity and being new and innovative, as I try to be with my outfit choices, clothing alterations, and shopping/saving methods. Secondly, the word that originally came to mind was “moderation.” I believe everything in life is concerned with keeping a balance and doing things in moderation, and fashion is no exception. Thirdly, it rhymes with “odd” which I most certainly am.

Duck –> It completes the expression! Plus, who doesn’t like ducks? hehe…

Hopefully you all love this new title as much as I do. I think it perfectly brings together what my blog is about, what I am about, and it makes me giggle. Win, win, WIN.

happy friday everyone!

Bauble Bar Soirée

20130724-091822.jpg

Yesterday evening my friend Sam and I headed down to Soho for some Bauble and bites at Bauble Bar’s social event. Trying to make the most of my last few weeks here in NYC, I am making it a mission to attend all the fun events I can!

The room was packed with tables and tables of costume jewelry, a photo booth, makeup station, and refreshments– including a Luna Bar vending machine and what appeared to be Godiva cocktails.

Presented with a $10 coupon upon arrival, I was thrilled to walk away with this awesome green necklace! The kissing tiger bracelet was Sam’s purchase hehe

The One Piece That Does It All

20130720-142153.jpg

The one-piece made quite a comeback this summer, revived on runways and recently in Miami for the Swimwear shows. They are classic, sexy, and, better yet, versatile!

If there is one must-have for your beach getaway, I’d say make sure you pack this universal piece that you can wear all weekend long. Hitting the shops? Pair it with cut offs and a crossbody. Then, throw on a floppy sun hat and sun screen and vamos a la playa! Out for dinner and drinks? Pair with a solid maxi skirt and a clutch that complements the smaller colors in your maillot. Your quick-change mastery will ensure you keep the weekend rolling and not remain held up in your closet!

Today I am off to explore Coney Island, where I can switch from ride to ride to beach side with the zip of my shorts!
PS- clothing haul coming soon. This suit is a vintage Marni. I’ll let you guess what I got it for…. ;)

Till next time!
